FRANCHE-COMTÉ
This a region of mountains, woods, plateaus, lakes, waterfalls and pastures and is renowned for its natural beauty. Probably one of the least explored regions in France, there are opportunities for canoeing and hiking. The Doubs valley is worth visiting for its caves and stunning waterfalls, as is Baume-les-Messieurs.
Franche-Comté is a region and historical province in eastern France, which includes most of the French portion of the Jura mountain range and the plateau of the upper Saône River. It comprises the departments of Jura, Doubs, Haute-Saône, and Territoire de Belfort. The pine forests in the Jura and the pastures for stock raising are important to the area's economy. A section of the Jura slopes is planted with grapes. The Franche-Comté is famous for its Gruyère cheese and its watches and clocks.
WATERWAYS
The Franche-Comté is a crossroads in French waterway network. The main waterways of this region are the Canal de Bourgogne, the Saône, the Canal du Rhône au Rhin and the Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne. The Canal de Bourgogne passes through beautiful scenery including the Ouche valley. Canal du Rhône au Rhin is used mainly pleasure craft. It passes through rolling hills, rocky cuttings and open countryside.

TOURISM
Franche-Comté comprises 4 main areas; Belfort, Haute-Saone, Doubs and Jura. Belfort is on the borders of Alsace, Germany and Switzerland, and is a land rich in history and heritage. With the Vosges to the Jura Mountains, it is an ideal place for hiking, horseback riding and biking on 540 Km (350 miles) of marked trails, through its green countryside. Haute-Saone is a rural region between the Jura and the Vosges mountains with the Saône river flowing through. It has deep forests, wide vineyards and fine cherry orchards. The Doubs and Jura regions border with Switzerland and is more than largely forested. Its exceptionally beautiful rivers can be fished for trout. It offers number of lakes such as St. Point, springs, waterfalls and caves.
A traditional, rustic way of life continues in this peaceful, relaxing region of France still little affected by tourism.
