River Cruise - Saint Malo
Saint Malo
Saint-Malo is a walled port city in Brittany in northern France on the English Channel. It is a a sous-préfecture of the Ille-et-Vilaine département. Saint-Malo has 53,000 inhabitants, but that number can increase to up to 200,000 in the summer tourist season. With the suburbs, the population is about 135,000.
Saint Malo has historically been a very independent part of Brittany and the locals consider themselves "Maloin" before Breton or French. The walled city is fascinating, particularly when you realise that the town was almost completely destroyed by bombing in World War II. The residents insisted on rebuilding the entire town exactly as it was.
Sites of interest in Saint Malo include: The walled city (La Ville Intra-Muros), The Château of Saint-Malo, The tomb of the writer Chateaubriand on the Ile de Grand Bé, and The Cathedral of St. Vincent.
